| 479 | 2 jobs: 1. I have a problem with penetrating damp which has previously been diagnosed by a structural engineer as caused by rain penetration through a thin, non-cavity exterior wall. Most of the wall has previously been sealed on the inside with sand and cement mix and is not letting damp through. However there are 2 small areas that have had some work done on them during alterations and afterward they were not sealed with sand and cement mix. These two areas have become very damp. The requirement is to hack off and remove damaged plaster to the two areas ( approx 1m x 1m & 1m x 2m) and apply waterproof sand and cement mix to the exposed brickwork and then replaster. 2. This job is a bit more difficult to explain! This Victorian terraced property was extended 2-3 years ago. In accordance with modern building regs there is bed of polystyrene under the new concrete floor. Immediately at the back of the extension is a manhole that gives access to a drain. On lifting the manhole cover a small area of the the polystrene can be seen (smaller than 1m x 0.5m). Rats have come up from the drain and burrowed through the edge of the polystyrene and got under the house. (I can email a photograph if it is useful). I have had this inspected by a council environmental health officer and he advised that the rat hole should be blocked with chicken wire and the exposed polystyrene sealed with a fast drying cement mix. |
